About
Aussie Beer Voyage
Aussie Beer Voyage is a exploration of craft beer through the eyes of a couple of mates, Adsy & Joel. Being comfortable in front of a camera, Adsy is your host, while Joel is more familiar with running footage and directing Adsy where possible.
After finding a perceived gap in the craft beer scene of Australia to do with produced media, and both having various skills across the industry, ABV was born. A craft beer podcast that provides interviews with industry people as well as, hopefully, entertainment and information.

Our Story
Aussie Beer Voyage (ABV) is the brain child of two Aussie mates, Adsy and Joel, on a voyage through the craft beer scene. Both have long and rich histories in the craft beer industry, having come to it through very different angles. Adsy had long pursued a career in the craft beer world, chasing the home brewer dream of one day brewing professionally. Joel, a self-confessed motorsport and aviation videographer and photographer who loved craft beer.
When they both met at Helios Brewing Company due to Adsy brewing a beer with the help of Charlie Hodgson (ex Head Brewer), and Joel being required to film some footage of Adsy for their socials, a friendship began. Fast forward to mid 2022 and they both saw a gap in the entertainment offerings available to Aussies, by Aussies, central to craft beer. You may or may not be familiar with Adsy from the numerous videos posted throughout the Helios’ social pages. Joel was the director and editor of every second of footage, with some that should remain on the cutting room floor. A common theme and friendship lead to the creation of Aussie Beer Voyage. A brand new media content service built entirely by each of them working outside of their “normal” jobs. With the number of contacts in the industry that they both have, it was thought that maybe, they would be able to create something truly unique, interesting, and hopefully entertaining.
Aussie Beer Voyage aims to feature informative and fun interviews with some of the country’s best craft beer industry people. From brewery owners and head brewers, industry reps and external services, to bottle shop veterans and home brewers alike. Everyone will get a voice and time to share their story while cracking a cold one to chat over. Our aim is to educate and inform, entertain and inspire. With over 20 new breweries opening in Australia every year, seemingly despite the pressure that COVID put on the industry, now more than ever is it an exciting time to delve deep into some of the countries best craft beer stories. Being based in South East QLD, expect many early episodes to feature in the local area. But given enough time and attention, expect the stories to to travel far and wide on this Aussie Beer Voyage. Cheers!
In early 2024, Adsy started a new, audio only podcast called Pour It Out. Hosted by Adsy with co-hosts Joel, Phil and Dan from Hiker Brewing, and ayone else who shows up and wants to chat. It’s a basic craft beer news and interests program that is recorded weekly every Tuesday afternoon from 3:30pm at Hiker Brewing.
Also in early 2024, Adsy started another podcast called Brews Brothers Podcast. Hosted by Adsy, Max from Philter Brewing and James from Esker Brewing. The Brews Brothers Podcast dives into one aspect of brewing beer each episode. Sometimes ingredients, a process, equipment and more! Learn, laugh and join in as these three try and figure out who knows more. Recorded semi-regularly, it will launch in April 2024.

Meet Adsy
Adsy is one of those people who is a long time craft beer drinker who's turned it into a career. And now, he's trying something a little bit different...
With over 25 years experience in the hospitality industry, there's really no style of bar that he hasn't worked in and enjoyed. With the explosion of craft beer around the world and then here in Australia, he wanted a piece of the pie and went after it.
A home brewer with 6 years experience, 3 of them also working in a local home brew shop to fund his hobby, he went from kit and kilo, right through to all grain brewing and joined the Ipswich Brewers Union home brew club. He was successful with multiple awards in their inner competitions, and scored a 2nd place in the 2019 QABC competition with a Fruit Lambic, Honey, Beetroot & Fig Sour.
In early 2020 with COVID taking over the world, he dropped back his full time IT role to study brewing at TAFE in QLD. Halfway through his studies he started work at Helios Brewing Company where he learned even more under Charlie Hodgson. At Helios, Adsy and Charlie (Helios Head Brewer) would converse over beer, about beer, nearly every day. Adsy helped bring Cerberus and Perseus to life, with each winning a Bronze medal.
After 19 months he made the move to Parched Brewery for a short stint before landing at Catchment Brewing. Somewhere in there he started Aussie Beer Voyage with his mate Joel Thomas (co-founder/director of ABV). Adsy and Joel work well together with Adsy taking over the hosting duties and Joel not letting him touch the expensive equipment. Adsy is the main host of Aussie Beer Voyage videos, doing all of the interviewing on video, and occiasionally joined by Joel.
Adsy is also the host of two other podcasts run by ABV. One is called Pour It Out, a weekly news and interesting stories craft beer audio only podcast. Join Adsy as he chats with Joel, or Phil or Dan from Hiker, or anyone else who shows up with a story.
The second new podcast is called Brews Brothers Podcast. Hosted by Adsy, Max from Philter Brewing and James from Esker Brewing, this podcast is all about learning together. Between them they know a lot but want to learn more. Join in for the laughs, learning, occasional bit of technical knowledge and heaps of boasting over a beer or two.

Meet Joel
Who’s Joel and where is he? Most of the time you’ll find him behind the camera, making it all happen behind the scenes. Filming, directing, editing and taking photos. Oh, and enjoying a quality craft beer!
Joel moved to Brisbane in 2011 to follow his passion of film and TV, and after completing a Diploma in Screen and Media, found himself in an array of freelance jobs within the industry. Working on projects that covered a wide spectrum including military aviation, motorsports, news, fashion, and…beer!
After discovering his taste for craft beer, when his mates shared some cans of Mountain Goat’s Fancy Pants Amber Ale with him, Joel set out to find some media work that related to craft beer. After applying to a few breweries, Helios Brewing snapped up the chance to have Joel work alongside them in promoting their company by creating a range of videos and content for social media.
It was while working at Helios, that Joel meet Adsy during a video shoot for a homebrew event. It wasn’t much later that Adsy joined the Helios crew, where he spent plenty of time working alongside Joel for a range of projects, most notably creating video content. The pair worked well together and formed a firm friendship, so it was only natural that they continue their creative partnership in the world of craft beer…and so, the Aussie Beer Voyage was born!
Since starting the Aussie Beer Voyage, Adsy has pushed Joel to use his talents even more by having a website. Up until now Joel secured his work through word of mouth, but no longer. You can find his portfolio on Thunder One Media where he’s available for all sorts of work.
Joel is also an avid beer drinker and will occasionally pop up on their new audio only podcast Pour It Out as a co-host from time to time. You can’t miss the dulcet tones Joel has from his previous AM radio career…

Meet phil & dan
Phil & Dan from Hiker Brewing Concern are two dedicated brewers just wanting to make good beer. Adsy has already called it one of the best breweries in Brisbane for quality and you’ll likely see a beer or two from them in the ABV awards. Cheers to that, and cheers to Hiker.
Watch the interview we did with them here! Phil is the main co-host of Pour It Out audio podcast with Adsy, although Dan will step in when Phil’s occupied, such as travelling the world to go on a hike!

Meet Max
Max is the Head Brewer at Philter in Marrickville in Sydney. He’s originally from Bavaria in Germany and came to Australia through the Australian Brewery (now Esker Beer Co), went off to Beer Farm for a bit, then came back to Australian Brewery and then onto Philter. He’s been brewing longer than most people his age and has a lot of experience, but treats every day as a new chance to learn.
Maximilian knows beer and he put the idea to Adsy and James in their personal Brews Brothers group chat for a podcast. He’s the full-time co-host of Brews Brothers Podcast, a part of the ABV family.

Meet james
James is a Senior Brewer at Esker Beer in Rouse Hill. He has been there honing his craft while also starting his own gypsy brand called Straight Arm Brewing with a mate. In 2023 James’ beer won Champion Hazy Pale at the Australian International Beer Awards. Ever the humble man, James has more experience than he likes to admit and continues to deny he has any brewing knowledge whatsoever.
James is a quiet achiever and happy to let others take the limelight, unless he’s winning awards for hazy beers! He’s the full-time co-host of Brews Brothers Podcast, a part of the ABV family.
